Trailer Maintenace
Why do my boat trailer brakes feel weak or uneven when stopping?
Weak or uneven braking is a common issue on boat trailers and can result from several causes. Addressing the problem quickly is important for safe towing.
Common Causes
- Worn Brake Pads or Shoes: Reduced friction material leads to longer stopping distances.
- Air in the Hydraulic Lines: Air bubbles prevent proper pressure, causing a spongy brake feel.
- Uneven Pad Wear: One wheel may grab harder than another, creating pulling or uneven braking.
- Contaminated Pads or Shoes: Grease, oil, or brake fluid on the pads reduces stopping power.
- Sticking Caliper or Actuator: Corroded or damaged components can prevent smooth brake engagement.
- Low or Leaking Brake Fluid: Loss of fluid reduces hydraulic pressure and weakens braking force.
What to Do
- Inspect brake pads/shoes for wear or contamination. Replace if needed.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir and hydraulic lines for leaks.
- Bleed the brakes to remove air from the system.
- Inspect the calipers, wheel cylinders, and actuator for corrosion or sticking.
- Service or replace faulty components to restore even braking power.
