Trailer Maintenace
What is Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)?
The Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the maximum weight that each axle on your trailer can safely support. This rating includes:
- The trailer’s own weight (frame, axles, components)
- The boat
- Fuel, gear, and any additional load carried on the trailer
Why GAWR Matters for Boat Trailers
- Prevents Overloading: Staying within GAWR ensures the axle, hubs, and suspension aren’t overstressed.
- Safety: Overloading can cause axle bending, brake failure, bearing failure, or even total axle damage.
- Handling: A properly loaded trailer tracks straighter, brakes more predictably, and sways less.
- Longevity: Helps reduce premature tire wear and suspension fatigue.
Where to Find GAWR
GAWR is specified by the trailer manufacturer. It is usually printed on the trailer’s VIN placard or capacity sticker (often found on the tongue or frame). Always check this rating before loading your boat and gear.
⚠️ Key Note
GAWR is per axle. On tandem- or triple-axle trailers, the combined GAWR is the total capacity of all axles together—but weight should still be distributed evenly across all axles.
