Trailer Maintenace
What is the center of gravity on a boat trailer and why is it important?
On a boat trailer, the center of gravity (CG) is the point where the combined weight of the boat and trailer is perfectly balanced. If the trailer were supported at that point, it would remain in equilibrium without tipping forward or backward.
Why the Center of Gravity Matters for Boat Trailers
The center of gravity directly affects axle placement, tongue weight, and towing safety:
- Axle Placement: When positioning axles on a trailer frame, the CG is used to determine the correct location.
- Tongue Weight: Proper CG placement ensures the trailer maintains 5–7% tongue weight (for boat trailers), preventing sway or instability.
- Weight Distribution: Ensures that the boat’s weight is carried evenly across the axles and hitch.
- Safe Towing: A trailer with an unbalanced CG may sway, fishtail, or overload tires and axles, leading to dangerous handling.
