Replacing Spindles on Eliminator Torsion Axles – Instructions & Technical Service Bulletin

Technical Service Bulletin

Technical Service Bulletin Notes (from Tie Down/Dexter)

  • Always use new cotter pins when reinstalling.

  • Ensure spindle seating is flush and secure before torquing.

  • Apply anti-seize to prevent future seizure in the torsion arm.

  • If the hub or spindle shows signs of excessive wear, cracks, or scoring, replace the parts immediately.

Replacing End Units on Eliminator Torsion Axle

Can I replace my spindles?

  • Spring Axles: If you have a spring axle, the spindle cannot be replaced. You must replace the entire axle.

  • Eliminator Torsion Axles: If you have a Tie Down/Dexter Eliminator Torsion Axle, the spindle can be replaced. One of the main benefits of the Eliminator design is that it features removable spindles, eliminating the need to replace the entire axle when a spindle is damaged.

How do I replace my spindle on my Eliminator Torsion Axle?

Follow these steps carefully (refer to the service bulletin diagrams if available):

  1. Remove the wheel & hub: Take off the tire/rim assembly. Place all hardware in a clean area for reuse.

  2. Remove the cotter pin: Using pliers, remove the SS cotter pin from the spindle on the backside of the torsion arm.

  3. Remove the castle nut & washer from the spindle.

  4. Loosen the hub/spindle assembly:

    • Use a malleable or hard rubber hammer to tap around the edge of the hub.

    • If the torsion arm is exposed on the backside, reinstall the castle nut flush with the spindle end and tap the rear of the spindle to drive it loose.

  5. Remove the hub/spindle assembly completely from the torsion arm.

  6. Prepare the new spindle: Coat the conical portion with anti-seize compound before installing.

  7. Reinstall assembly: Insert the new spindle into the torsion arm, then reinstall the washer and castle nut. Torque the castle nut to 100 ft. lbs.

  8. Secure with cotter pin: Insert and bend a new SS cotter pin in place.

  9. Reinstall the wheel assembly and tighten lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
