Trailer Maintenace
Is the winch, winch line, or winch stand enough to secure my boat during transport?
No. The winch, winch line, and winch stand are not designed to hold your boat in place while towing. Their purpose is to:
-
Launch the boat
-
Retrieve the boat
-
Act as a stop to keep the boat from rolling off the front of the trailer
Using the winch as a tie-down can stress or damage it, shorten its service life, and may even cause failure on the road. Manufacturers like Fulton specifically warn against securing boats or loads to trailers with the winch and strap.
To transport your boat safely:
-
Always use proper tie-down straps: At minimum, secure the transom with rear straps.
-
For added safety, use a vertical bow tie-down that connects the bow eye directly to the trailer tongue. Most winch stands include an eyelet at the base for this strap. This prevents bow bounce and forward shifting during sudden stops or rough roads.
📌 Remember: Tie-downs—not your winch—are your boat’s primary means of being secured during transport.
