Trailer Maintenace
Can I use a weight-distributing hitch on my boat trailer?
We do not recommend using weight-distributing hitches on boat trailers. Unlike RV or utility trailers, boat trailers are designed differently and can be negatively affected by these systems.
The main concerns are:
- Brake Interference:Weight-distributing hitches can interfere with surge brake systems common on boat trailers. If not perfectly adjusted, they can reduce brake effectiveness—creating unsafe towing conditions.
- Frame Stress: Boat trailers often feature a wishbone frame, which isn’t designed to absorb the added leverage and torsion from weight distribution systems. This leads to overloading of the most highly stressed part of the trailer: the tongue. Over time, this could result in frame fatigue or failure. This extra stress may force the trailer frame to perform beyond its design limits, potentially leading to premature failure.
For safe and reliable towing, stick to a properly rated coupler and ensure correct tongue weight distribution (5–7% of total trailer weight for most boat trailers).
