Trailer Maintenace

How do I properly hook up and disconnect my boat trailer using a Demco EZ-Latch coupler?

Hooking up and disconnecting your boat trailer with a Demco EZ-Latch coupler is a quick and tool-free process—ideal for solo launching or retrieving your boat. The EZ-Latch design automatically engages the hitch ball, improving safety and convenience, especially on boat ramps or uneven surfaces.

To hook up your trailer:

  1. Position the trailer coupler directly above the correct size hitch ball on your tow vehicle.
  2. Lower the trailer tongue using the jack until the coupler fully seats over the hitch ball.
  3. As the coupler lowers, the EZ-Latch system auto-engages—you don’t need to lift the handle.
  4. Check that the coupler is fully latched (the handle will return to a down-forward position).
  5. Attach your safety chains, crossing them underneath the coupler for added security.
  6. Connect your trailer wiring harness and test all lights.
  7. Optionally, insert a coupler lock through the latch hole to deter theft.

To unhook your trailer:

  1. Chock the trailer wheels and ensure the tow vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Disconnect the safety chains and trailer wiring.
  3. Use the jack to lift the trailer tongue until the coupler clears the hitch ball.
  4. As you lift, the EZ-Latch will automatically release—no need to manipulate the latch.

Important: Always confirm you’re using the correct hitch ball size and secure all connections before towing. For safety, do not exceed the weight ratings of your coupler or tow vehicle.
