Trailer Maintenace
How often should I inspect my boat trailer brakes?
Boat trailer brakes should be inspected before each trip and given a more thorough inspection every 3 to 6 months, depending on how often you tow and whether you launch in freshwater or saltwater.
What to Check Before Each Trip
-
Brake Pads or Shoes: Look for uneven or excessive wear.
-
Rotors (Disc Brakes): Ensure they are free of heavy rust or scoring.
-
Drums (Drum Brakes): Make sure the shoes are not worn or contaminated, and check the flush kit (if equipped) for function.
-
Wiring and Hydraulic Lines: Inspect for corrosion, cracks, or leaks.
-
Brake Actuator: Confirm smooth operation and check for signs of sticking.
Seasonal or 3–6 Month Inspections
-
Disc Brakes (standard on Venture trailers where applicable):
-
Inspect calipers for sticking or corrosion.
-
Check stainless hardware for signs of wear (saltwater accelerates corrosion).
-
-
Drum Brakes:
-
Use the flush kit regularly to clear out saltwater deposits.
-
Remove drums periodically to check for shoe wear, spring tension, and contamination.
-
-
Brake Fluid: Replace at least every 12 months — sooner with frequent saltwater use, since moisture intrusion is common.
-
Tires and Hubs: While inspecting brakes, check hubs for heat and ensure bearings are properly greased.
Saltwater Considerations
Saltwater launches significantly increase the risk of brake corrosion. To extend brake life:
-
Rinse brakes thoroughly after every saltwater launch (disc brakes must be hosed down manually; drum brakes may have flush kits).
-
Inspect more frequently — every 3 months or mid-season if you tow often in saltwater.
-
Upgrade to stainless steel or galvanized components where possible for maximum durability.
