Trailer Maintenace
How often should I replace the brake fluid in my boat trailer actuator?
Brake fluid in a boat trailer actuator should be changed at least every 2 years, or sooner if it appears dark, cloudy, or contaminated. Because brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air), it can corrode internal components and reduce braking efficiency over time.
Maintenance Recommendations:
-
Inspect fluid regularly – Check the reservoir before each trip. Low or discolored fluid may indicate leaks or contamination.
-
Flush the system during replacement – Always remove old fluid completely and bleed the system until clean, fresh fluid runs through.
-
Use only approved fluid – Most trailer actuators require DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid (never mix different types).
-
Saltwater use requires extra care – Trailers frequently submerged in saltwater should have brake fluid inspected more often, as corrosion risk is higher.
-
When servicing brakes – Always replace the fluid after installing new lines, calipers, or wheel cylinders.
Safety Tip: Never let the master cylinder reservoir run dry during service, as this will introduce air into the system and require full bleeding.
