Trailer Maintenace
How do you know if the emergency breakaway has been pulled on my actuator?
The emergency breakaway system is designed to activate your trailer brakes if the trailer disconnects from the tow vehicle. If it has been pulled, your brakes will not function normally until it is reset.
How to Identify Breakaway Activation:
-
General Signs:
-
The trailer brakes may feel locked or unresponsive.
-
The breakaway chain/cable will appear engaged or pulled out of its switch/housing.
-
-
On Titan/UFP Actuators:
-
On Tie Down Engineering / Dexter Actuators:
-
The button stop will be visibly extended (see diagram in manual).
-
Resetting the Breakaway System:
-
Reinsert the breakaway pin fully into its housing (or reset the lever/button as designed).
-
Inspect the breakaway chain/cable for damage or fraying and replace if necessary.
-
Verify brake fluid levels in the actuator reservoir.
-
Test trailer brakes before towing.
Safety Reminder:
Never tow with a missing or engaged breakaway pin. This feature is a legal safety requirement and must be operational at all times.
