Trailer Maintenace
Causes of Boat Trailer Axle Misalignment
-
Impact Damage (Very Common in Boat Trailers)
-
Launch ramps, steep driveways, or hitting curbs at marinas can bend or shift the axle.
-
Trailers are often pulled over uneven ground or submerged, making them more prone to impacts.
-
-
Worn or Loose Suspension Components
-
Leaf Spring Trailers: Shackles, bushings, and hangers wear faster due to saltwater corrosion and repeated immersion.
-
Torsion Axles: The rubber cords inside can degrade over time, especially if exposed to moisture or overloaded.
-
-
Uneven Loading of the Boat
-
If the boat isn’t centered or is loaded too far forward/backward, it can stress one side of the axle more than the other.
-
Gear, fuel, and coolers stored unevenly in the boat also add imbalance.
-
-
Incorrect Installation or Adjustment
-
Axles not squared to the trailer frame at the factory or during service.
-
U-bolts loosened during adjustments for tongue weight but not re-tightened evenly.
-
-
Rust and Corrosion (Boat-Trailer Specific Issue)
-
Saltwater accelerates corrosion on spring mounts, brackets, and hardware.
-
Corroded components can shift or weaken, throwing the axle out of alignment.
-
-
Frame Flex or Damage
-
Trailers that are overloaded, backed improperly, or repeatedly submerged may develop frame warping.
-
A bent frame forces axles out of square even if the suspension looks fine.
